Installing Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) on a Dell Inspiron 8600
Additional Software Installation
| WMV, MPG, MP3 support | First time I downloaded an opened one of these file types, I’ve been asked to install appropriate codec. But don’t forget to enable “universe” and “multiverse” repositories first. (Can be done using System/Administration/Software sources) |
| KeePassX | This is a password manager that is multi-platform. Works well. Installed using Synaptic. |
| Firefox Extension: Foxmarks Bookmarks Synchronizer |
Bookmark synchronizer I setup to connect to my own WebDAV server. It as its problems (not linked to Ubuntu) but works well when synchronizing manually. |
| Firefox Extension: Sage Feeds |
Ok |
Note: In Firefox Add-ons window (Tools/Add-ons), there is a new link called “get Ubuntu add-ons” that seemed nice but all the extensions I installed using this didn’t work (didn’t appear to be installed).
Conclusion
Almost every new version of Ubuntu is getting better, except (in my case) the version 7.04 (feisty fawn). So I won’t return to 7.04 on this laptop.
